Reaktiv is making its sustainability commitment official with science-based emissions reduction targets, a partnership with RyeStrategy, and a clear plan for reducing our environmental impact. Several of our enterprise, technology, and higher education clients are working toward net-zero commitments, and supporting organizations that take climate action seriously gave us a reason to define our own sustainability initiative. With a general interest in responsible consumption and making choices that are good for people and the planet, our team admires their commitments. We are excited to contribute by taking responsibility for our operations and bringing the same care we put into the digital experiences we create into understanding and reducing the climate impact of our work. Our digital agency sustainability goals Reaktiv commits to reducing absolute scope 1 and scope 2 GHG emissions 42% by 2030 from a 2024 base year, and to measure and reduce our scope 3 emissions. To achieve our sustainability goals, we partnered with RyeStrategy, a CDP-accredited carbon management and climate disclosure firm. Reaktiv is committed to climate action, and our partnership with RyeStrategy accelerates our sustainability journey. The RyeStrategy team helped us calculate our carbon footprint, implement custom mitigation strategies, and educate our staff on making climate-focused decisions that support our decarbonization commitment and goals. “We are thrilled to be working with Reaktiv as they take this impactful step forward in their climate journey. We look forward to driving measurable impact through custom decarbonization advisory and mitigation strategy implementation to help Reaktiv achieve their sustainability goals.”— Cooper Wechkin, RyeStrategy CEO and founder We are proud to share that our near-term greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets have been officially approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). This validation confirms that our goals align with climate science and contribute meaningfully toward limiting global temperature rise. These targets mark a key step forward in reducing emissions across our operations. The business case for climate action Science-based targets give Reaktiv a clear path for decarbonization and an external standard clients can evaluate. They can also support business priorities. SBTi research found that 91% of surveyed companies with validated targets reported a positive overall impact on their business, while 74% said the targets improved alignment with supply chain and customer requirements. Our clients have already made that connection clear by asking partners to support their sustainability goals. Formalizing our own commitment helps us participate in those initiatives with specific targets, documented progress, and greater accountability. Digital sustainability starts with everyday decisions Digital sustainability shows up in the technical choices behind every site we build. Code, media, hosting, and data transfer all influence how much energy a website uses, and at enterprise scale, those choices repeat across thousands or millions of page views. The Sustainable Web Manifesto shares that “if the Internet was a country, it would be the 4th largest polluter in the world and is expected to grow considerably by 2030.” For Reaktiv, that makes efficiency a practical part of building and maintaining high-traffic digital platforms. Artificial Intelligence (AI) puts even more pressure on the infrastructure powering digital experiences. United Nations University research projects that, by 2030, the water footprint associated with electricity used by AI data centers could reach 9.3 trillion liters, equivalent to the basic annual domestic water needs of 1.3 billion people in sub-Saharan Africa. As AI becomes more common across websites, search, content systems, and business tools, decisions about when and how to use it carry a larger environmental cost. The W3C Web Sustainability Guidelines give Reaktiv a practical framework for making those decisions, offering recommendations across design, development, infrastructure, content, and AI, helping digital teams reduce unnecessary resource use while still meeting business and user needs. Sustainable web design influences how platforms are built Reaktiv brings sustainability into the planning and engineering decisions that shape how websites and large-scale digital platforms work, scale, and change over time. We consider the environmental and social impact of our work, seeking to identify opportunities to reduce unnecessary resource use throughout the lifecycle of a platform, whether it’s a robust Multisite network, a family of digital properties, or a single website. For us, it’s about making good technical decisions that serve the organizations we work with, the project requirements, the final deliverables, and the people who use what we build. For Reaktiv, sustainable web design includes: Building lightweight pages. We write clean code, compress media, remove unused scripts, and limit requests that add weight without supporting a user or business need. Leaner pages use fewer resources on the visitor’s device and can load faster. Making hosting and delivery more efficient.Smart caching and sensible CDN configurations reduce unnecessary server work and repeated data delivery. When project requirements allow, renewable-powered hosting and infrastructure can also lower the environmental impact of running a website. Prioritizing accessible experiences.WCAG-compliant interfaces, semantic structure, readable content, and logical navigation help more people use digital products confidently. The W3C Sustainability Guidelines recognize accessibility, inclusion, and digital equity as part of building a web that serves people responsibly. Designing for long-term change.Flexible architecture and reusable systems give organizations room to change workflows, add capabilities, and expand content without rebuilding the foundation every few years. A platform designed to adapt can reduce repeated development work and the resources required for frequent large-scale replacements. Using AI and third-party services deliberately. We consider the computing, scripts, tracking, storage, and ongoing value associated with the technology added to a platform. Avoiding unnecessary AI generation and low-value digital clutter can reduce resource demand while keeping the experience focused on what people need. Low-carbon web design has greater reach across enterprise platforms Enterprise platforms multiply the impact of repeated technical decisions across large audiences, extensive content libraries, and networks of websites. A heavy shared component or unnecessary server request can repeat thousands or millions of times, which means improving a shared system can affect resource use across an entire digital portfolio. Building complex platforms creates opportunities to address sustainability at scale. An optimized media pipeline can change how assets are handled throughout a network. A cleaner template can reduce the work required every time thousands of pages load. Improvements to caching, architecture, or shared components can carry across brands, departments, locations, publications, or institutions using the same underlying platform. Forward-thinking platforms designed to support future growth can extend the life of technical investments and reduce the need for resource-heavy redesigns and rebuilds. Low-carbon web design at enterprise scale is less about a single dramatic change and more about identifying decisions that repeat, improving them at the system level, and allowing those improvements to carry across a platform. A climate-conscious digital agency supports client sustainability commitments Our clients are bringing sustainability requirements into partner and vendor relationships. Climate commitments increasingly influence how organizations account for the impact of the technology supporting their business operations. We build high-performance digital solutions that solve complicated business problems, support the people who use them, and scale smoothly over time. Our sustainability commitment and science-based targets add another set of considerations to those decisions, giving clients clearer information about how we think about climate responsibilities. RyeStrategy will advise Reaktiv as we measure our footprint, track progress against our approved targets, implement mitigation strategies, and educate our team. We’ll also continue applying the W3C Web Sustainability Guidelines and looking for practical opportunities to reduce unnecessary resource use across the digital platforms we build and support. Our commitment to creating a sustainable future now has specific goals, and we have a plan for doing the work required to reach them. If you want to know more about our climate commitment, or want to work with a sustainability-focused digital agency, reach out. We’d love to talk.
